Sunday 14th August 2011 saw the Caribbean Golf Society (CGS) band wagon visit the Sapey Golf Course for the 6th Major of the year. Once again we were truly blessed with a wonderful day as the early threat of wind and rain was overcome by beautiful sunshine all day long. For anyone who has played at Sapey will know it is a nice warm welcoming place to visit, the golf course was in immaculate condition with fast greens, so for the CGS members who play their golf at Sandwell private golf club should have enjoyed the experience.

The announcement for ‘Order of Merit’ golfer of the year is just around the corner so for those in contention have been shining their clubs in preparations to do battle to get over the last couple of hurdles! There is not much of a gap between 1st and 10th position.

There was 43 members and guess who turned up for the mid-day golf, with guests coming from far and wide. So thanks to those visitors who came to support us from Bristol, London, Cheshire and Wolverhampton; Thanks to Jake Furness, Austin Simmonds, Richard Clark and Phil Smith. Also former members David and Delores Simon attended.

Well the day was all about enjoying the golf as best you can and Chad O’Grady certainly done that! Despite not playing regulation golf his putter was very hot. Especially after hitting some loose chips and racing his first putt by the hole, only to knock in the one coming back. Where many failed to master the greens, Chad was unflappable all afternoon and it showed in scoring 43 without a single birdie. Chad becomes the third person to record back to back wins on the CGS tour in five years. This win now catapults Chad into 15th place on the order of merit after only attending 3 events this year. So watch out guys Chad is on the march!

Other notables on the day was Ken Brown leading the longest drive competition after 6 groups had already gone out, this was interesting as Ken is not a big hitter at all, his best drive on a good day is about 220 -230 yards. However with the warm weather and dry and firm fairways he sent one out to about 260 yards. There were questions about what he had for breakfast that morning! Needless to say his lead did not last very long and was thoroughly beaten by his look-a-like and fellow CGS member Frank McCook with a drive just short of 300 yards.

Vice-captain Big Dean Leith secured the nearest the pin on the 145 yards par 3 on hole 11, hitting a 8 iron to within 10 feet of the pin, great shooting and well done to both Dean and Frank!

This was a big scoring day, many coming in with 39 points, Don Bramble, Linton Bell, Dean Leith and Vassell Brown. In with a massive 40 points to take second place was Rodney Dillon. This was the first time Rodney has picked up a prize at a CGS event, worth the trip from Wolverhampton.

Big hitting Ian Higgins was third overall with yet another score of 40 points on count back playing off a handicap of 11. Ian played a solid round and was one over gross after the first 9 but a lapse in concentration cost him the victory.
