ngg_shortcode_0_placeholderSunday was another fantastic day for the Caribbean Golf Society members. A warm bright sunny morning greeted the players as they started arriving for the days proceedings and take note we have been very blessed with weather condition for the 4th session in row, lets hope the weather will be good to us for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n
This was the first time the CGS arranged to play twenty-seven holes of golf on the same day. The morning started with a friendly four ball \u2018Texas Scramble\u2019 over nine holes, but the so called \u2018friendly\u2019 battle soon became very competitive, as the first four balls hammered their \u2018tee shots\u2019 down the middle of the fairway. It was a great way to warm-up for the afternoon session made up of eighteen holes of individual stable-ford golf and meticulous organising by the CGS Committee.<\/p>\n
Texas Scramble was a fantastic way of getting the morning four balls together, it seem to create that team spirit rarely seen when you play as individual golfers. The Texas Scramble format ensured that the morning session went by quite quickly but long enough to limber up those joints for the serious stuff later. After the morning events there was a refreshing bowl of soup and sandwiches to replenish the energy levels for the afternoon shoot-out!
\nWith fairly difficult flag locations, lush fairways, and very slow greens, the 18 holes to follow was full of drama, challenges and triumphs for some, whilst others were left thinking of what might have been. (Too many thoughts of platitude guys, lets just get on with it!) There were lots of interesting incidents on the course, one memorable incident was of Ian driving off at the first hole in the afternoon and pushing his \u2018Tee shot\u2019 well wide of the fairway and into the path of CGS four balls coming up the ninth. Now if you can imagine the scene, up until then any balls that went slightly of the beaten track, meant all members of that four ball went to look for that missing ball. On this occasion we all shouted \u2018Fore!\u2019 But unfortunately our shouts of \u2018fore\u2019 were not heard until it was too late to get out of the way. The ball struck Micky Taylor\u2019s chest and bounce off it like a gazelle leaping from the jaws of death from a Nile crocodile! When the other three members of Ian\u2019s group saw what happened including me, we cowardly started walking in the opposite direction when we saw the fury on Michael\u2019s face. Luckily Michael took the incident in good golfing spirit and did not rap his golf club around Ian\u2019s head! Ian returned to us and asks, \u201cwhat happened to the team spirit we had this morning?\u201d (Well, what would you have done, have seen the size of Michael\u2019 chest?) We all had a great laugh about it afterwards in the nineteenth hole!<\/p>\n
Looking at the overall scores it seems most players were keeping the ball on the fair way. There will be few more players going out to buy some plasters because they will be cut, yes I mean their \u2018Playing Handicap\u2019 cut, do I hear an \u2018Amen\u2019 from Vassel!<\/p>\n
There was a certain buzz about the nineteenth hole when all the four balls had signed and handed in their cards. It was a sure sign that CGS members are enjoying not only the golf but each other\u2019s company too! Even the Club captain Mr. Jacko Powell commented on how \u201cI am really enjoying the momentum of the society and can see great things ahead!\u201d<\/p>\n
On the day there were some good scores, some really good scores, some bad and some!…well we won’t say, but the winning score on the day was made by a man who had only paid is membership a few hours before going out in the final group and returning a score of 40 points just eclipsing Balbir’s score of 39 points which was one of the first scores posted. Congratulations goes out to Don Brambell playing off 9, chose the right time to join and with the CGS policy of non-members only being eligible for longest drive and nearest the pin prizes, your timing was perfect. Well done Don.<\/p>\n
Ansell Pottnger took over the longest drive with an awesome drive nearing 300 yards. Well, a few groups down the road up steps Junior Harris the CGS exponent of the long drive. Anyone who have seen one of Juniors drive will know that Junior puts his all into his attempt on the long drive hole, by the time “him finish him swing”, “him leave him shoes and socks behind”!..This time was no exception, he ripped one right down the middle of the fairway…”si it deh”, “si ball deh”, “ha dat yuh call drive”!!<\/p>\n
Now Junior walks down the middle of the fairway thinking, no one’s going to beat this and to his amazement and ten yards further and left of his drive was Ansel’s drive. So, for the second successive CGS event running some one has kept Mr. long driver himself out of the winning circle. I am sure Junior will be back with a vengeance at the next event.<\/p>\n
Ian Higgins a consistent golfer who’s very much enjoying his golf with the CGS finds himself in the winning circle for the second time by winning the nearest the pin with a lovely 7 iron shot into the centre of the green.<\/p>\n
