This being our first full season as an organisation it’s a great achievement to see how far we have come in such a short time.

The event was the start of our annual Ryder Cup style match against the Chris Morris Golf Society playing for the “Carib-Morris Cup” and a very nice trophy it is, similar in style to the actual Ryder Cup.

Well it was an early start indeed in fact the meeting time was at least two hours before the first tee time. Some members were not happy having missed out on at least an extra hour in bed, maybe some tactics from our hosts who suggested the time, maybe they were hoping the CGS boys would burn themselves out hitting balls on the range. Well that wasn’t the case, the CGS are made of sterner stuff and enjoy our golf so much not to let such matters distract from our objective.

After some words from our captain on team pairings we were ready to start our first co sanctioned event. On the first tee representing the CGS and with the added pressure of delivering our first point of the day was Carl Douglas and Neville Rhoden and deliver they did winning their match 3 & 1 which was the start we needed. With such a stellar start the rest of the team were able to follow suit and with our secretary Denny riding rough shot in a buggy keeping us all informed on our teams progress, some of the latter matches were able to relax knowing the team had done enough to win this inaugural event.

There was some excellent scoring going on out on the course, the birdies were falling in mass. Ian Higgins was dropping birdies for the fun of it. But this is match play and in match play you can make birdie and still loose the hole or make bogey and win it. This was evident with Don Bramble. Don played with Ansel and was having to make birdies to win holes (not good) Ansel’s 26 handicap just wasn’t enough to help win the match. I think they were 4 up at one point but ended up halving the match. Some of the CGS members who aren’t members of golf clubs will now understand the pressures of competition, knowing that you must think your way round the course in order to score well, I’m sure they’ll be ready next time around, it’s all good experience. Ian’s match was the reverse, six birdies coming from ‘Higgy’ playing with Ken Brown, they ran away with a 7 & 6 victory, the largest margin of the day, looks like a winning pairing, will need to consider them for next years match.

Word of thanks goes to Denny for turning up even though he wasn’t playing, to drive around in the buggy providing bottled water to players, taking photos of the event (di man versatile) and of course being very generous with his own pack of biscuits which he had bought for his little buggy ride around the course. Some of the guys really enjoyed those biscuits. I think Denny’s words were “The buggers dem yam off mi biscuit” he also said “I’m not doing this buggy ‘ting’ next year, I’ll be in the team playing”. That’s what we want to hear.

This was another well organized event with big thanks going to Dean our vice captain for arranging the event with the Chris Morris Society and to the Chris Morris guys for agreeing to play the match and organising the venue and all the prizes, very nice trophy to guys.
I’m sure you’ll have a chance to take the trophy next year but don’t bet on it, the CGS boys are up for this now and will be more than ready next year to retain the trophy.

Event Result:

                <colgroup>
                            <col class="ninja_column_0 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_1 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_2 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_3 ">
                    </colgroup>

It was a joy to see the CGS team turn out for our first ever match against another society.
