ngg_shortcode_0_placeholderSapey Golf Club was the setting for the 5th Major competition of the year. So far this year the weather has been very kind to the CGS, however on Sunday the weather was not the best, although it could have been worst.<\/p>\n
It was a long drive across to upper Sapey through some lovely scenery along narrow country roads. Despite wet conditions, the CGS was out in force with thirty two members and guest gracing the golf course to play twenty seven holes.<\/p>\n
After some early refreshment we set out for the par 3 nine hole course to play a \u2018Texas Scramble\u2019 competition. Considering each player could only take two clubs and putter out on the course there was some great iron play. Ian Higgins was on fire, he was peppering the pins for fun and he almost had a hole in one on at least three occasions.<\/p>\n
Nearly all the groups reported some great play in the morning format, Don Brambles group where probably the hottest group on the Oaks course finishing as winners on 2 under par with 23 stableford points.<\/p>\n
After an hours break for lunch were ready for the afternoon\u2019s major event with lots of prizes up for grabs plus the a place on the team for the \u201cCarib-Morris Cup\u201d along with Order of Merit points. Once again there were some quality tee-shots being struck on the first tee and with out-of-bounds running all the way down right side of the first fairway players had to be careful not start their round on a bad note.<\/p>\n
Highlights throughout the day were a plenty, David Simon recorded a tap in birdie on the very first hole after a wonderful approach shot. Ian Higgins also playing in the same group picked up an easy birdie on the par 5 7th, our longest drive hole. Roan Mcleod was putting well, recording two birdies on the 11th and on the par 3 13th the longest par 3 on the course which also happened to be his designated birdie hole. Tony Sealy had his best round to date hitting the ball nice and straight even if his shots sometimes strayed on to the apposing fairways. Winston Clark some how manage to go out of bounds whilst putting on the green (don\u2019t ask how he manage to do that!). Some players like big Dean Leith was struggling with a dodgy knee which hampered his round, he also had a rough time with his umbrella, which meant he got truly soaked through to his smalls! Dean did manage to have some success on the 10th where he pulled off a lovely draw off the tee around a tree that is stuck right in the middle of the fairway, he then got on the green and two putted for par.
\nDeloris Simon was the only women in the field this time round but she enjoyed herself after a reasonable round and is very much looking forward to the next round.<\/p>\n
Overall there was some good scoring out on the course when you consider there was a strong wind and rain to make things worst. However no one could stop first time winner Carl Douglas, who was way down the Order of Merit and not looking a likely candidate for the \u201cCarib-Morris Cup\u201d unless the captain granted him a pick. Carl was able to secure is place in the team with a strong 37 points in telling conditions scoring 16 points on the front and a fantastic 21 points on the back. Carl Said he was truly humbled by the win and would like to dedicate this win to a great guy and friend Errol Johnson, who sadly passed away on the 11th July aged only 48 years old. Carl also wanted to thank Peter Key a close friend of his for introducing him to the game of golf not too long ago and to the CGS members for enjoying this win with him, congratulations to Carl.<\/p>\n
ngg_shortcode_1_placeholderAnother first time winner was Emmanuel Sylva (Pictured receiving his award from Ronald Ross)<\/strong><\/em> who picked up the nearest the Pin prize, he said he was very surprised to see so few names on the marker board which really made his day. He said he used a soft eight iron to get close to the pin, a soft eight iron, a 23 handicap golfer saying he used \u201ca soft eight iron\u201d, at least he\u2019s learning the lingo, well done Emmanuel keep up the improvements.<\/p>\n Ansell Pottinger once again (Pictured below receiving his award from CGS member Deloris Simon)<\/strong><\/em> proved he will be a major force to deal with, especially when it comes to picking up the prize for the longest drive. What can I say about this guy, well for the first few holes Ansell was using his rescue club and a five wood off the tee with varying degrees of success, he eventually got the \u2018Big Dog\u2019 out for the longest drive 7th hole. He swung his driver through the ball majestically, which saw the golf ball travel at least tree hundred yards if not more. Ansell said \u201cI was as surprised as anyone else to pull that drive out of the bag, it felt great and I don\u2019t know why I left it in the bag so long\u201d On another hole Steve Mullings and Ken Brown both stood open mouthed as they witnessed Ansell hitting a nine iron 172 yards, they are still wondering how he managed to do that, Incredible!\u2026Ansell does have his moments when he hits it long and straight.<\/p>\n ngg_shortcode_2_placeholderWell after a greats days golf it was time for the evening meal and presentations. I am sure all the CGS members and guest had a fantastic meal and pudding, I\u2019m sure many people were bowled over with the great tasting salmon dinner and the treacle cake and custard. CGS members let me hear you say \u201cmore like that\u201d, de pudding sweet me is a shame!… no doubt many people had more than one bowl of that delicious pudding.<\/p>\n Finally the Caribbean Golf Society would like to thank Sapey Golf Club for welcoming us to their club and for their hospitality. A special thank you goes to the staff at Sapey, who provided us with great service and a lovely meal. The CGS Members would also like to thank the committee again for organising another very good day out and for all their hard work that goes on behind the scene<\/p>\n In Overall Second place was Ansell Pottinger with a very credible 36 points just missing out on first place by one point!<\/p>\n Third Place: loosing out on count back and also with 36 points went to George Oliver, apparently George had been steady all day long and putted like a professional in the morning Texas Scramble.
