After several weeks of intense heat, the cooler conditions provided an ideal backdrop as members arrived in great spirits and ready for another competitive outing.

We were welcomed by the club professional and directed to the dining area, where a private room had been reserved for our post round gathering. Breakfast and coffee were served from an excellent menu, and the familiar CGS camaraderie quickly took over. As always, late arrivals were reminded of their contribution to this year’s chosen charity, Prostate Cancer UK, with a few dress code offenders also adding to the pot.

Before heading out, members made full use of the excellent practice facilities. Stonebridge boasts a superb driving range and an impressive selection of family‑friendly recreational activities, including an adventure golf course that attracts visitors of all ages. It is fair to say that golf is just one of many attractions available at the complex, making it a standout venue for families and players alike.

Once play began, the pressure was immediate. The event was staged as a medal competition, adding a significant mental challenge. Every shot mattered. Every mistake counted. Every decision had consequences. The course itself offered its usual challenge. The opening hole a 347‑yard par four with a left‑to‑right sloping fairway demanded accuracy from the outset, with several balls finding the lake on the right. Firm fairways and receptive greens required thoughtful shot‑making throughout the round.

The Big Guns Battle for the Main Prize

The headline contest of the day featured three of CGS’s heavy hitters:

Al Beckford, last year’s CGS Captain, returning from a long winning lay‑off and determined to secure a major win.
Dale Bromfield, the reigning holder of the Champion of Champions trophy, fully intent on defending his crown.
Carlton Donalds, the homeboy playing on familiar turf and refusing to be beaten on his own course.

The battle was tight throughout, with Dale pushing hard to retain his title …a couple of unfamiliar bogeys however proved costly. Undeterred, Carlton produced a composed and determined performance, holding his nerve when it mattered most. Despite the close challenge from Dale, Carlton pipped him at the post, securing victory by a single shot.

Main Prize Winners

Position Player Net Score
1st Champion of Champions Carlton Donalds 72
2nd Dale Bromfield 73
3rd Al Beckford 75 (on countback)

A well‑deserved congratulations to all competitors, and special recognition to Carlton Donalds, who claimed the Champion of Champions trophy with an excellent performance.

Next Event

The CGS bandwagon now moves on to the Secretary Shield on 12 July at Gaudet Luce Golf Club, a long‑standing favourite among our members.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Paul Ramsey
CGS Captain.

The CGS bandwagon rolled into Stonebridge Golf Club, just off the M45 near Coventry, for our latest society event.
