As customary the final grouping is normally made up of the four players capable of winning the overall order of merit, so accompanying clear leader Frank McCook was Dean Leith, Ian Higgins, and Linton Bell all scrapping for the minor places.

Current order of merit leader and certain winner Frank McCook could really take his foot off the gas and stroll home without even scoring a point he would still win the overall title.

The group in front of Frank, said they could hear Frank laughing and saying “did you see that shot” as he saluted the shots played by his fellow members on his way down the fairway. Although he did not need to turn up for this final event the spirit of the man meant he wanted to play to consistent level throughout the season. Not only did he achieve his sought after level of consistency but he added to his sole season victory by making it a double with a 40 point round to take the Staverton title.

Frank started the season playing off a 17 handicap; next season he will start as a 14 handicap golfer with the CGS.

The CGS members take their hats off to Frank who not only displayed some great golf all the year round, but he has been a true gentleman on and off the course and as contributed to the society through is involvement as a staff writer in producing event reports. So on behalf of the CGS Chairman, Captain and fellow members we all wish Frank, many more golfing successes for the future.

There were other great golfing stories from around the course, certainly in group six. Former CGS member Rocha Ford who played as a guest, gave a golfing lesson to the guys in his ‘Four Ball’ from ‘Tee to Green’ he was superb for the first seven holes and finishing two over par for the first nine holes, he then went on to hit eight out of nine fairways and greens on the back nine. Although he missed at least seven good birdie attempts on the back nine, his golf was a joy to see and on the 18th hole he drove his tee shot into the left hand bunker and with 136 yards to the green he managed to hit the green in regulation, his ball however failed to stay on the green and finished in the semi rough where he conjured up a fantastic chip in for a birdie. His all round game was worth the entrance fee ‘so to speak’ well done Rocha lets hope you re-join next year.

There was also some competitive play for the minor places in the event with Eric Queely coming through with 37 points for second place and Clyde Pyle just holding off both Ronald Ross and Ken Brown take third place on count back with 36points.

The longest drive went to Ian Higgins with a 290 long straight drive and nearest the pin on the 169 yards Par 3 went to George Sinclair who landed within 4 feet of the pin.

Congratulations to all the winners this year, and for all those who have taken time out of their busy family lives to enjoy the events this year. Remember that it’s the taking part and being around like minded people who like to play golf that makes this game and the CGS so enjoyable.

The CGS members would like to send a special congratulation to our Handicap Secretary Roan McLeod, who sent his apologies for his inability to attend our final major because he was away on his honeymoon. A very good excuse, so we all wish him and his wife many golfing years together!

The CGS members would also like to extend their thanks and appreciation to all the committee members who work so

Scores from event:

                <colgroup>
                            <col class="ninja_column_0 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_1 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_2 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_3 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_4 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_5 ">
                            <col class="ninja_column_6 ">
                    </colgroup>

Staverton Park Golf Club was the venue for the CGS final event of the year; the course was in splendid condition and although a bit cold to start with the […]

[8

post-952","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-golf-major","has_thumb
["GET
