New Member Trevor Lammy Wins at Sapey
The CGS held the 3rd major event at Sapey golf course on the Worcestershire and Herefordshire border on Sunday 20th of May. The field of 32 members and guests enjoyed a dry day in the beautiful surroundings of Sapey’s golf course in what is our 4th consecutive year of holding a major event at this venue.
The course offered a tough but fair day’s golfing for all members and guests with only one player able to play better than his handicap scoring 37 stableford points with three others playing to their respective handicaps.
Congratulations to our 3rd new Major winner of the season Trevor Lammy. Trevor is a new member from Coventry who played his first event on Founders day as a guest. As a fully fledged member he played his first event at our second major at Shropshire Golf Club last month, and carded 37 stableford points at Sapey winning by just one point in a tough field of competitors.
Second and third and indeed fourth place had to be settled by count back due to the fact that all three members posted a score of 36 stableford points. Congratulations go to George Oliver for securing second place on count back aided by a wonderful chip in on one of the par 5 holes.
Congratulations also go out to Toney Sealy for picking up his first ever trophy coming third after sealing third spot on count back. A shout goes out to Keith Salmon who also returned a score of 36 stableford points and narrowly missed out on a trophy on this occasion.
A special thank you to Carlton Donald who attended his first CGS event as a guest. Thanks also go out to Tony Brown and Charlie McCook who have been guests on a few occasions. A warm welcome back goes to John Kirnon a former member who attended as a guest after recovering from health issues.
Congratulations to our CGS captain Elford Douglas for winning the longest drive, it was a tough drive with out-of-bounds down the right hand side protected by trees and bushes on both sides with a very narrow fairway only the straightest of drives would be able to challenge.
The nearest the pin in one prize was collected by Ian Higgins with a cracking shot over water that stopped a mere 2ft 9inches on a sloping green from the pin.
We also introduced a new prize for nearest the pin in two on a par 4; this was introduced as a new challenge to allow those players who do not hit the longest of drive a chance to compete on a level playing field. This prize was picked up by Dean Leith, with a good drive and a second shot landing 29 ft from the pin on the 18 hole.
Congratulations to all those members and guests who took part on the day, as we look forward to the next event at Swindon golf course on the 24th on June hopefully the weather is more favorable than last season!
