The Caribbean Golf Society Support the Lord Mayors Charity Golf Day
Eight members from the CGS; Denny Senior, Junior Harris, Linton Bell, Mary & Keith Riley, Ian Higgins, Rucha Ford and Steve Mullings, represented at Cocks Moors Woods Golf Club on Sunday the 26th June to support the outgoing Lord Mayor and his wife, Len and Jill Gregory in raising funds for various charities covering all sections of the community.
These are; “The Burns Centre at the Children’s Hospital”, “PHAB Camps”, “The Stroke Association” and the “Birmingham Institute for the Deaf”
The day started in glorious sunshine, which got better as the day went on, with Denny, Junior & Linton teeing off at 8.20am, in their red CGS shirts, totally looking the part. The golf wasn’t too bad either, although Junior using his driver on the 1st hole instead of a sensible 5 iron down to the brook resulted in a lost ball with a wild drive into the bushes.
Linton was playing great golf on the front 9 scoring 19 points, with Junior having an equally good back 9, with Denny being a spectator and admiring the play of his 2 fellow committee members. The climax of the round was the 17th hole, a short par 4 of 285 yards, with Denny focussed on clearing the brook of approx. 150 yards, with Junior saying “ dat don’t come into play, I’m going for the green” and with that he launched his drive 7 metres from the pin.
The prize on the 17th was a night for 2 at the Albany Hotel for those nearest the pin in one. This looked the likely the winner for a long time, unfortunately we found out on Monday he was beaten by the professional from his club “Pype Hayes”.
Mary & Keith Riley were also playing good golf with Keith having the longest drive on the 8th hole for long while but was finally beaten. Mary should some quality golf on the day and was rewarded with the top lady golfer’s prize. Congratulations to Mary but it looks like husband Keith will be doing the washing up again!.
Ian, Rucha and Steve, all teed off some 3 hours after the first CGS group and hopefully they played well and enjoyed the day.
The event was also ideal for networking, with the committee gaining some useful contacts which could benefit the Society in the future. Joel Graham-Blake (pictured with the Lord Mayor – see event pictures) who is working with England Golf in the role of “Inclusion & Diversity Development Officer” was invited to attend a CGS event to experience how we function as an organisation.
The CGS would like to thank Steve the professional at Cocks Moors for inviting us to attend. Cocks Moors Woods is part of our history; this is the course where we gathered and established our first event.
We would also like to wish the outgoing Lord Mayor and his wife, the best for the future and hoped they raised plenty of funds for their chosen charities.
