Our Final Outing – The Caricom Trophy
2026 Final Outing – The Caricom Trophy
Handsworth Golf Club | Sunday 4th October 2026
The curtain came down on another fantastic year for the Caribbean Golf Society as members gathered at Handsworth Golf Club to compete for the prestigious Caricom Trophy.
Handsworth is certainly no stranger to the Caribbean Golf Society. It has been a popular destination for many years and remains a venue that holds special significance for our members, not least because it was once the home club of our late brother, Ken Brown RIP.
It was therefore a fitting opportunity to remember Ken and reflect on the many good times we shared together.
Arrival and Morning Hospitality
The day began under slightly overcast skies but, as seems to happen whenever the Caribbean Golf Society arrives at a golf club, it wasn’t long before the sunshine made an appearance.
A healthy turnout of 36 players assembled for the Society’s final competition of the season.
It was particularly pleasing to welcome our old friend Jasper, who made Handsworth his destination of choice for the day. Although not yet ready to play a full round, Jasper remains a valued member of the CGS family. His determination remains as strong as ever and we look forward to seeing him back on the fairways in the future.
We were also delighted to see Denny “The Headmaster“, our former Treasurer, Founder Member and Honorary Member, who joined us to show his support.
With registration completed and refreshments enjoyed, members spent the next hour sharing stories, catching up with friends and enjoying the usual CGS banter before play commenced.
Practice Time
As the start time approached, members gradually made their way to the practice areas.
As is always the case, this is where the mood changes. Conversations become quieter, concentration levels increase and everyone begins preparing for the challenge ahead.
Following the draw, players headed to their allotted starting positions.
The lead group consisted of Mr Captain , Lloyd Thomas, Anthony Davidson and Raph Wallace, setting off determined to post a competitive score. Unfortunately, as is often the case in golf, the round included a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly.
The Challenge of Handsworth
Handsworth Golf Club provided a stern examination of golfing ability.
The greens were exceptionally quick and extremely challenging, punishing any lapse in concentration and rewarding only the most confident putters.
The fairways were generally in good condition despite the resident flock of Canadian geese, which have clearly adopted the course as their permanent home.
Adding to the day’s entertainment was the appearance of a remarkably friendly fox roaming the course in broad daylight. Lloyd “Bugsy” Thomas decided to share a few scraps with his new companion, who then followed him for the next three holes.
Handsworth remains one of the country’s historic golf clubs and its character is evident throughout the course. It is never an easy test, but that is precisely what makes the experience so enjoyable.
The leading group also managed to maintain a steady pace of play, completing the round in approximately four and three quarter hours, a respectable time for a CGS four ball.
Following the completion of the round, players exchanged handshakes, submitted their scorecards and returned to the clubhouse to await the arrival of the remaining groups.
Clubhouse Hospitality
The hospitality provided by Handsworth Golf Club was first class throughout the day.
Staff looked after us extremely well and, once all competitors had returned, members settled down to enjoy some well earned food and refreshments.
The traditional golfing menu of pie, chips and beans proved popular, while apple crumble and custard provided the perfect finish to the meal.
Members also supported the Society’s charitable activities through donations, continuing CGS’s long standing commitment to giving back to the community.

That’s a Wrap for 2026
And so, after another year filled with golf, friendship, competition, laughter, good food, questionable shots and countless CGS memories, the curtain falls on the 2026 season.
A sincere thank you goes to everyone who has supported the Society throughout the year, whether by playing, organising, volunteering or simply contributing to the atmosphere that makes the Caribbean Golf Society so special.
Special recognition must also go to our dedicated committee, whose tireless work behind the scenes ensures that every event runs smoothly. Their commitment and hard work are greatly appreciated.
Yesterday served as a reminder that the Caribbean Golf Society is about much more than golf.
It is about friendship, camaraderie, competition, community, shared experiences and creating lasting memories.
With the memory of our dear brother Ken Brown RIP firmly in our thoughts, it was especially fitting that the 2026 season concluded at a club that he once proudly called home.
Congratulations to all our winners and thank you to everyone who contributed to another successful year. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2027.
