Founders Day – Season Opener Captain’s Match Report
The Caribbean Golf Society officially kicked off the new season on Bank Holiday Friday with our annual Founders Day event at the mighty Sandwell Park Golf Club …and what a start it was.
We had an incredible turnout of 29 keen and enthusiastic golfers, all eager to showcase the “winter work” they’ve been talking about for months. Spirits were high, confidence was overflowing, and the energy was pure CGS.
Before the first tee shot, Chairman Micky Taylor gathered the group for an important moment of reflection. We stood together in solidarity in the absence of our brother Ludlow Stewart, who recently lost his beloved wife, Judy. Our thoughts and prayers remain with him and his family. A touching and respectful start to the day.

Once play began, Sandwell Park reminded us why it has a reputation for being one of the toughest tracks around. Add in the fierce winds forcing players to take two or even three extra clubs and the course became a true test of skill and patience. Some players battled bravely. Others… well, let’s just say the wind wasn’t the only thing sending balls left, right, and occasionally a little too close to the M5. A few shots are still unaccounted for.
But despite the conditions, one man rose above the chaos.
Winners and Runners‑Up
1st Place – Martin Gayle (36 points)
On his CGS debut, travelling from Erewash Golf Club in Nottingham, Martin delivered a calm, composed, and clinical performance to claim the Founders Day Trophy and the first prize pot. A fantastic achievement.
2nd Place – Simon Dixon
After navigating more motorways than a delivery driver from Manchester, Simon produced a strong round to secure second place.
3rd Place – “Home Boy” Micky Taylor
Representing Sandwell Park with pride, Micky claimed the final podium spot.

Hospitality
A huge thank you to Sandwell Park GC and its members for allowing us to take over the course on Bank Holiday Friday. To chef Anil and his team for the outstanding Caribbean‑inspired meal:
Rice and peas with chicken, or salmon for those feeling refined, followed by a choice of apple pie, apple crumble with custard, cheesecake, or chocolate brownie.
Nobody left hungry …some left ready for a cat nap.
CGS Charity – Prostate Cancer UK
This season, CGS is proud to support Prostate Cancer UK, a cause close to many of us. Thanks to the “generous golfing errors” of Junior Harris, Al Beckford, and Winston White, our charity pot has already started to grow through fines. With the way some of you play (and behave), we expect the fund to stay very healthy this season.
Appreciation
A special thank you to Sandwell Park’s Club Captain, Dev, for welcoming us and wishing us well for the season. A classy gesture and much appreciated.
Next Event – The Shropshire Golf Club
Our next outing takes us to The Shropshire Golf Club for the Fix Up Cup keep practising and bring your best game.
Blessings and respect, CGS family.
On to the next one.
