Lecint Smith Takes the Honours at Maxstoke Park
The CGS once again arrived at Maxstoke Park Golf Club home to former chairman Junior Harris to contest this year’s 5th Major the Secretaries Shield.
Unfortunately, Junior could attend this year’s event due to injury but we hope he has a speedy recovery.
Once again, the event was well attended with 38 players turning up for the challenge, of which we welcomed two guests from Nottingham Lloyd Gordon & Carlos Wallace playing in his first event.
We also welcomed back one of the CGS legends Ian (Small Axe) Higgins. This was his first outing since the end of the 2023 season due to illness. It was great to see him back.
Once again, we had wonderful weather however the fairways had suffered from the recent hot dry spell. Leaving them burnt out with some bare spots and causing some unpredictable bounces. The greens though were their usual in very good condition and quick.
Last years winner George Branch was looking to retain the trophy, however, this would not be the case.
So, as the players came together in the clubhouse for a bite to eat and to find out who had come out on top the results were as follows, and let’s just say it could not have been closer.
In third place with 35points, and losing out on countback was Linton Bell. He had an exceptional front nine scoring 22points not sure what happened on the back. But “isn’t that golf”
In second place the reigning OoM champion Roan McLeod who birdied holes 7, 8 & 9 but however a triple bogey on hole 3 would cost him dearly as he also lost out on countback with 35points
In first place unbelievably again with 35points a man who some say can hit a ball hard when catches it despite often not knowing where it will go (ask Harvey Lawrence). The man known more for his music than his golf Lecint Smith.
Lecint in contrast to third placed Linton had an exceptional back nine scoring 24points, again don’t know what was happening on the front. But to coin a phrase “Isn’t that golf”
Now to the minor prizes
Nearest the pin in one (Hole 9) – Roan McLeod
Nearest the pin in one (Hole 16) – Vassel Brown
